Batch image conversion tip

From time to time I get asked how to easily convert, resize or rename photos. So, this is my flow of doing it.
  • Download IrfanView and it's plugins (may be handy in future) and install first IrfanView, then plugins.
  • Open IrfanView and press B or select File - Batch conversion / Rename
  • A window will pop up

Batch conversion if you'd like to convert pictures (to different format, size or crop them etc.)
Batch rename does what it's name says - renames a sh*tload of photos for you.
Batch conversion and rename does all of the above.
Set your desired output file type (mine is JPG) and you can also change some format specific options by clicking Options button on the right side of file type.
I won't explain options found here, they should be pretty self explainatory. If not, just put in quality you'd like to save in. NB!!! This window is JPEG/GIF specific. For PNG and other formats there will be different options window.

Ok, back to big Batch conversion window. On right you see navigation pane. Move to your desired folder, select photos you want to process and press Add. Alternatively you can press Add all, if you'd like to convert/rename all photos located in that folder.

Output directory, well, it's where your processed photos will be stored.

And now to conversion options found under Advanced button
CROP - lets you crop your images by selecting crop area size and position
RESIZE - Resizes your images. Easy as pie (I usually resize by setting long side size)
remember to tick Preserve aspect ratio
As you can see there are lots of other settings available. Most of them unnecessary for everyday batch conversions, but check out Sharpen when resizing.
Miscellaneous corresponds to different file saving actions. Apply those as you deem best. Hit ok and then Start Batch button in main Batch conversion window. A window will pop up and show progress. Open your freshly processed images and do other post-process work or publish them. That's it :)
